In Art Clubs we explore creating art with the guidance of professionals. The meetings focus on subjects such as writing poems, creating visual art, or practicing performing arts. At the end of the series of meetings, we’ll prepare a small ensemble, for example a performance or an exhibition. To attend, you won’t need any prior experience within arts. The most important thing is having fun while creating together.

The clubs are aimed at Oulu-based people over the age of 65, who are experiencing some sort of change in their lives or need some company and joy in their day to day life.

Art Clubs are free of charge, and mostly taught in Finnish.

”This day is the highlight of the week.” ”Excellent teachers. The atmosphere was nice throughout the course.”

Get to know the Artists

Artists Niina Aho, Tatja Hirvenmäki and Heta Haapsamo work as the teachers of the spring 2025 Art Clubs.

Niina Aho

Niina Aho is an art director from Oulu. They live in Nokela, in an old house that always has some renovations going on.

“In my work within the artistic field, I especially enjoy encounters with people, and working on things together. The most important thing for me as a teacher, is to create a safe and relaxed space, which is the basis for everything. The purpose of these clubs is to ponder one’s life path and biggest moments in life through creating art, as well as to share experiences and memories. The Art Clubs are meant for absolutely everyone, and the participants won’t need any prior skills or knowledge on how to create art. At these clubs we don’t have to perform a certain way, or take any pressure. Our goal is to find joy in creativity and creating together. You get to try painting, writing and other creative methods. I warmly welcome everyone to join the Art Clubs, to spend time in good company, and with art. Come as you are, we want you to join us!”

Tatja Hirvenmäki

Tatja Hirvenmäki is among other things an actor, drama teacher and a hospital clown. In addition to their nearly 20 year career as a professional actor, they’ve recently focused on teaching drama and art, as well as working as a hospital clown. At the moment Tatja works as a full time hospital clown. In the first set of Art Clubs in 2023, Tatja Hirvenmäki and Kimmo Hirvenmäki (husband) organized four art clubs in different locations around the Oulu area.

Heta Haapsamo

“I’m Heta Haapsamo, a dancer from Oulu. My interest to art was awakened by pictures. My art studies have given me a strong basis for creating art. After this my path took me towards articulacy and dance studies. Later on I studied to become a masseuse. My interests have led me to work with the well-being of body and mind. They’ve also led me to find creative ways to meet and to be met with. In my work, I widely use the methods of dance and movement combined with visual art, improvisation and literary art.”
